The SafeStart Health Initiative was not just a random project.

It was based on real and diligent assessment of the state of when it comes to pregnant women.

The survey was done in 6 underserved communities in the Akuapem South of the Eastern Region. The communities include: Konkoduru, Berekusu, Pokrom, Adomorobe, Obuodaka 1&2 and Kitase.

Each community had 20 respondents - totaling to 120 women respondents.

The Baseline survey results as follows:

1. The most significant barrier is the non-availability of portable ultrasound services (70.2%) could not identify facilities with ultrasound services

2. Only 17.4 % of respondents acknowledged to be in proximity of ultrasound services (within 5km radius)

3. 5% of respondents agreed services we in a CHPs compounds. Most accessed ultrasound services in district hospitals outside the municipalities.

This clearly showed the and need for the .

Overtime, impact was slowly observed and nurtured. Work is still in progress. But below is an overview of the impact measured as of March 2026:

1. Average of 50 scans done per community visit.

2. Access of ultrasound services improved from 17.4% to 100% in those communities - enabled by continuous visits.

3. 1,000+ pregnant women accessed essential maternal health screening and support.

You can find the Midline report here: https://shorturl.at/YfOD1

One key observation from the report is that - most families are in search for ultrasound services but access is the main barrier.

Introducing the SafeStart Health Initiative!

Since January 2025, ICDP Ghana, in partnership with Ultrasound Consultants International LLC and the Ghana Health Service, have been on a mission to bridge the gap in rural maternal healthcare.

In many rural communities, expectant mothers face long travel distances and high costs just to receive a basic ultrasound. SafeStart changes that by bringing portable diagnostic technology directly to them.

Beyond the clinical data, we are providing reassurance and reducing anxiety for mothers, ensuring every child has a "SafeStart" in life.
We are looking for partners to help us scale this life-saving mission!
