10 Helpful Tips for Diabetics Observing Ramadan by Dietician Evame

1. Always carry glucose treatment with you.

2. Always have diabetes identification, such as a medical bracelet, tag, record book or medication packages.

3. Test your blood regularly and whenever you feel unwell during the fast to monitor your glucose levels. This will not break your fast.

4. If your blood sugar level is high or low, you must treat it immediately.

5. If your blood glucose is less than 4.0mmol/l, end the fast immediately and treat the low blood sugar level or proceed to the hospital.

6. If your blood glucose level is higher than 16.7mmol/l, end the fast immediately and proceed to the hospital.

7. If you become dehydrated, end the fast immediately and have a drink of water.

8. If you start to feel unwell, disoriented, confused, if you collapse or faint, stop fasting and have a drink of water or other fluid.

9. You should never stop your insulin, but you must speak to your doctor because you may need to change the dose and times of your insulin injections.

10. If any of this happens speak to your Dietitian or Medical Doctor before fasting again.

Wish all Muslim brothers and sisters a healthy Ramadan

NUTRITIONAL PILL FOR TODAY

NUTRITIONAL RESOLUTIONS 1

Every beginning of a year people make resolutions to be better and achieve some goals.

Today, i want to ask you if you have made some nutritional resolutions.

Yes, its important that you make them. Don't just eat anything through out the year because it will have implications on your health. Plan what and how you will be eating.

Do not rush into taking decisions, take stock and identify the eating habits that were bad last year and the ones which were good and systematically decide to make small changes that will give you little gains in your nutrition and health.

Resolve to eat better for a healthy lifestyle.

LIFE IS PRECIOUS SO EAT TO LIVE.

MY A TO Z OF HEALTHY EATING

Z- ZUCCHINI IN THE MIX

Zucchini or summer squash is one of the unknown vegetables with great nutritional benefits. It looks very much like cucumbers.

It is very low in calories or energy. About 250g contains only 30 calories. This is not surprising since water makes up 94% of it.

It has some appreciable amounts of folates and vitamin A as well. Fibre is by far another major component of this vegetable which makes it good for Diabetes, cholesterol, and weight loss.

It is advisable to add the skin to the meal since it contains a lot of these nutrients.

So next time you cook please try zucchini, it's not for the affluent since it's not expensive. Stop the one way vegetables, your cooking is getting boring, try zucchini or squash.

GET ZUCCHINI IN THE MIX FOR YOUR STEWS AND SOUPS.

NAHSAG URGES WOMEN TO OBSERVE THE "NO BRA DAY" TODAY 13TH OCTOBER, 2016.

It's no doubt not only the Ghanaian populace is enjoying the euphoria of . While we enjoy every bit of it,it's worthwhile for our ladies especially to seize the day and take a moment to self examine their breasts for lumps or any other abnormalities such as discharge, size, pigmentation etc which may be indicative of breast tumours, cancer or other breast related anomalies.

Johns Hopkins Medical center states,
“Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.”

How Should A Breast Self-Exam Be Performed? The national breast cancer foundation has simplified it! And the good news is there're a lot of options!

1) IN THE SHOWER
Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot. Notice any changes and get lumps evaluated by your healthcare provider.

2) IN FRONT OF A MIRROR
Visually inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.
Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the ni***es. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side._

3) LYING DOWN
When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit.
Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the ni**le; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

NB: it's incumbent on the breast self examiner to report any anomaly detected during the procedure to the health care provider.Early detection saves much!

NAHSAG wishes all and sundry the very best of this day especially our cherished ladies/women/girls/mothers!

It's our anticipation that you'd commemorate this day by taking a moment to self examine yourselves.
Save a breast today!
Save a woman today!
Reduce breast cancer incidence today!
Be an ambassador today!

Happy..
Happy..

Thank you.

NUTRITIONAL TIP FOR TODAY

MY A TO Z OF HEALTHY EATING

Y-YOGHURT (NATURAL) VERSUS ICED CREAM

One of the most beneficial fermented products is yoghurt. It is made from adding culture (unharmful microorganisms in small quantities) to milk. They feed on the lactose sugar in the milk and produce lactic acid to give yoghurt it's great taste.

Natural yoghurt doesn't have added milk and sugars unlike the other types of yoghurt while iced cream has other colours and sugars added.

Advantages of natural yoghurt over iced cream healthwise include lower calories because the sugar has been used up by the bacteria.

The presence of the good bacteria is known to help strengthening the stomach against infections.

Claims of improved vaginal health are also associated with natural yoghurt. Persons who are intolerant to milk also benefit when they take yoghurt. We should be careful not to add so much starchy thickeners and flavors to the milk so as not to increase the calories.

So add some natural yoghurt to your meals as replacement for iced cream to drop your caloric intake and offer you some protection.

Don't forget that fermented foods are of great benefits to the body.

NUTRITIONAL TIP FOR TODAY

X-XEROPTHALMIC TEARS

Xeropthalmia is a vitamin A deficiency disease in which there is dry eyes and lack of tearing.

It could lead to sores and ulcers in the eyes. I dare say that we must not suffer from these in the abundance of the mangoes, carrots and palm oil in our country.

I get worried sometimes when people stay away completely from these fruits and vegetables because they are afraid of chemicals leaching into them. We run the risk of having such primitive diseases such as xeropthalmia.

I believe the possible effects of these chemicals is a lesser evil compared to that which we risk having if we do not take these fruits and vegetables at all.

Then again appropriate washing with salt water and vinegar and being careful when choosing can help us. If we are that concerned we should all start a backyard garden but until you do so I encourage you to have your fruits and vegetables.

Also remember that tearing is antiseptic healing to your eyes whether you are a male or female, so it's okay to intentionally cry at times.

Avoid a xeropthalmic(dry) cry and save your eyes.
