In April 1964, Ghana held a national referendum that approved constitutional changes making Kwame Nkrumah President for Life and establishing Ghana as a one-party state under the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

The referendum results reported over 99% approval, though the process has since been widely criticised for lacking political freedom and credible opposition.

On 24 February 1966, Nkrumah was overthrown in a military coup while on a diplomatic trip to Asia. The coup ended Ghana’s First Republic and ushered in a period of military and civilian-led governments.

This remains a defining moment in Ghana’s political history and constitutional development.
