I once watched a construction supervisor walk around a site.
He barely touched a calculator.
Yet everyone listened to him.
Why?

Because building structures isn't only about calculations.
It's also about coordination.

A Civil Engineer may know how to design a bridge.
But they also need to:
β†’ Manage teams
β†’ Read construction drawings quickly
β†’ Resolve site conflicts
β†’ Communicate with contractors
β†’ Manage budgets
β†’ Handle deadlines
β†’ Make decisions under pressure

University teaches how to design structures.
The real world teaches how to deliver them.
And both matter to you for your career growth as a civil engineering student.

Soft skills and experience will take you far

A friend once told me:
"I spent four years studying machines, but nobody taught me how to deal with people."
At first, I laughed.
Then I realized he was right.

A Mechanical Engineer may design a machine perfectly.
But if they can't communicate with technicians, suppliers, managers, or customers, that design may never succeed.

Some important skills school rarely teaches include:

πŸ”§ Technical communication
πŸ”§ Negotiation
πŸ”§ Project planning
πŸ”§ Leadership
πŸ”§ Cost estimation
πŸ”§ Team collaboration

Engineering isn't only about machines.
It's also about people working together to solve problems.

Sometimes the best engineer isn't the one who knows the most equations.
It's the one who can turn ideas into reality.

One day during my internship, I was standing beside an experienced technician troubleshooting a faulty control panel.

I had passed my circuit theory courses.
I knew Ohm's Law.
I could solve complicated calculations.

But when he asked me:
"What do you think is causing the fault?"
I froze.

Then I realized something important:
Engineering school teaches you how systems work.
But the field teaches you how to think when systems stop working.

As an Electrical Engineer, some of the most valuable skills aren't even in the syllabus:
β†’ Troubleshooting
β†’ Reading technical manuals
β†’ Communicating with technicians and clients
β†’ Writing reports
β†’ Teamwork
β†’ Project management
β†’ Learning new technologies quickly

A degree teaches engineering.
Experience teaches engineering judgment.
Combine both and you will be very difficult to be replaced as an electrical engineer.
To be on a safe side, take more online courses and partake in all your internships.

Have you ever wondered why electricity can flow through a copper wire but not through a piece of rubber?

The secret lies inside the atoms.

Some materials, like copper and aluminium, have electrons that are only loosely held by their atoms.
These electrons can move around freely.

When a voltage is applied, the electrons begin to move, creating an electric current.
That's why we call these materials conductors.

But materials like rubber, plastic, and glass hold onto their electrons very tightly.
The electrons cannot move easily, so electricity struggles to flow through them.
That's why we call them insulators.

Think of it like this:
In a conductor, electrons are like people moving freely through an open hallway.

In an insulator, the hallway is blocked, so nobody can move.

So the reason some materials conduct electricity is simple:
They have electrons that are free to move.
And without those moving electrons, there would be no electric current.
