Audi! The Reason Behind Its Name And Four Rings

Audi is a well-established German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles produced in nine different production facilities worldwide.

Its origin dates back to the 1860s when engineer August Horch founded the two initial enterprises, Horch and Audiwerke.

◼ How Audi Got Its Name

August Horch founded his first company, "A. Horch & Cie," in November 1899, which he later turned into a joint-stock company, "August Horch & Cie. Motorwagen," in May 1904.

After five years of operation, Horch moved on and founded his second company, "August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH," in July 1909 due to misunderstandings with his chief financial officer.

His former partners sued him based on trademark infringement, and the German Supreme Court prohibited him from using the "Horch" name for his new company.

To develop a new name, Horch met with two business friends. During the meeting, his friend's son, who was studying Latin in the corner of the room, suggested they call the new company Audi and explained that Audi is the Latin translation of Horch, which means "to listen."

On April 25th, 1910, Audi Automobilewerke was registered.

◼ The Reason Behind Audi's Four Interlinked Rings

The four interlocking rings that makeup Audi's emblem represent the companies that merged to form Audi's predecessor, the Auto Union, in 1932.

These were Audiwerke, DKW, Wanderer, and Audi's old competitor Horch.

In 1965, Volkswagen acquired complete ownership of the Auto Union, dumped the production of DKW and Auto Union models, and called the cars it produced the Audi. Thus firmly establishing Audi as a brand.
