I look forward with gratitude to the next four years in government. Democracy allows for change, perspective, and purpose. This change presents challenges and significant rewards if we can all work together. I will not shy away from the work ahead; thank you for electing me, and congratulations to all my colleagues in the new term of government.

As our election approaches, I extend my thanks to everyone who has supported me: my family, friends, sponsors, fellow candidates, the media, voters, hustings and event organisers, and the dedicated election team in the civil service. Democracy thrives on the contributions of many, and every role is vital. The future of our island now rests with our registered voters. It's a busy time in the lead-up to the election on the 18th. There has been a lot of engagement with organisations and the electorate. It's very important to know and understand who we are electing.

For anyone who would like to hear what I have to say, I will be speaking at hustings events with many different candidates: tonight (4th) in St Martins, tomorrow (5th) in the Vale, and next Thursday (12th) in St Peters.

Our Economy : Our Community : Our Decisions

In my previous posts, I have referenced my Dad and Grandfather for their skills and decision-making. The third and final part of my three-part series covering my manifesto looks at our economy, an area where I have spent my whole career. The economy concerns all our families. It is vital that we get our economy right.

Our Economy:

There is no hiding place in our economy and it is the measure of us. We must support sustainable growth and tame inflation. We must manage our population and increase housing. Travel links remain critical and must be boosted.

We must do all of this now. No “if’s” no “but’s”, no more reviews. No more waiting.

Our economy and our government needs to be funded to invest in our future. We must continue on the path that we have set and implement the GST-plus package.

The GST-plus package is a hot potato, but it shouldn’t be, and it’s much needed if we want to keep our schools, hospitals, and other public services in good shape.

GST will raise significant revenue, which, importantly, will include extra revenue from companies, visitors, and the wealthy on our island.

The GST-plus package introduces a levy of 5% and includes critical protections for lower earners. The protections include a new 15% Income Tax band on everyone’s income up to defined limits and an increase in the income tax allowance. A restructuring of Social Security contributions also aligns with this to give everyone an allowance. It will also provide pre-emptive increases to pensions and benefits to protect against inflation. There will be a scheme to provide financial support to certain low-income households outside of the benefits scheme.

Approximately 60% of households on the island will be better off, and those who contribute more can afford to do so. For those that wish to read more about the package can access the leaflet Our Island Our Future on my website www.niles.gg

The last assembly have debated and reviewed, they have then debated and reviewed. There is no better, fairer, credible option. Now is the time to implement.

Our Economy : Our Community : Our Decisions

This is the second in my three-part series, which covers my manifesto and looks at our Community.

Our Community:

My dad was Chris Niles, born in 1936. He was 9 at the end of the occupation. His mum died when he was 11. He began working as an apprentice carpenter at Leales Limited at the age of 14. He understood the value of a trade, and carpentry sustained him and his family. He was a respected man.

Our community’s future hinges on skills; our young people need support and a clear strategy as they embark on their journeys. Let’s harness the entire educational ecosystem of independent and state school systems and stop trying to divide the two.

As the chair of a local charity, we recognise that alongside businesses and government, charities are vital to our community, and we must assist them in achieving our community goals.

Our community thrives through its people. We must ensure that our businesses, parishes, and representatives are aligned, putting an end to divisive, siloed debates. Let’s build an informed assembly that is confident in its decisions.

Let’s willfully collaborate to get the best for Guernsey.
