Jackson, Belling and Aga - or perhaps Az Jacobs, Chris Bagust and DJ Mutch. Often also accompanied by DJ DocLeaf, Mr Bee and Ma Crace. During their half a dozen years or so together in the early/mid 1990s they were a band, a recording collective, and AV act. Fused in (and often known as) the Interzone and isolated in a south Devon backwater (no internet then..) their most creative period was named
‘The Wilderness Years’ due to the lack of any releases for the bands prolific audiovisual output - hundreds of hours were captured, but many more not…Only a few demos ever made it out of their Moonbase Alpha studio, mainly handed personally to contemporary artists like Aphex Twin, Orbital, The Shamen, The Orb, Drum Club, Eat Static, Hexstatic, Coldcut etc. A wholesale move to London in 95 and a lead from fellow Totnesian Jimmy Cauty (KLF) installed them at Fortress Studios (no.2 - Compton St EC1) where they diversified into drum & bass which was the happening scene. But it appears that the range of styles that were being output made for an unlikely fit with the various labels of the time. A possible release on Aphex's Rephlex imprint was not mutually agreed, Mighty Force (who first issued Aphex Twin's Didgeridoo) couldn't take it all on board, an introduction to Novamute from Richie Hawtin at Club UK didn’t progress, Planet Dog appeared unreachable (luckily as they soon after folded) and discussions with Rob at Warp were unfortunately also cut short.. The lack of luck extended to various gigs that were cancelled, several at the last minute, and a disaster at their biggest outing at Plymouth Warehouse (OZ) in 94 when the feed to the main PA didn’t work. A second chance to run that set the very next day at a Weirdo’s Ball event in Riverford Farm in pouring rain left half the equipment soaked. Eventually with no feedback to fan the flames, and personal pressures increasing, the band petered out in the late 90s…The legacy of The Roland Stoves / Interzone has remained elusive but is gradually finding its way online after all this time with a series of remasters on Bandcamp.
