I was called to this property to remove the towel rails in the en-suite and main bathroom to allow the customer to paint the walls behind them. I would then fit new chrome towel rails in their place as the original white ones had started to rust and looked unsightly.
Whilst I was there the customer told me about an issue she had with the washing machine where it had flooded the kitchen mid cycle. I said at least you knew where to turn the isolation valve off to stop the water leaking out until the machine was either repaired or replaced as we’ve discussed this previously (she’s been a customer of mine for a while now).
It then transpired that although she did know where the isolation valve is, only her teenage children were home at the time. The kids didn’t know what to do or how to turn the water off (and if she did try to explain what did what, they still wouldn’t have the confidence or would want to mess with any valves or taps without knowing what really did what).
I then went on to suggest the installation of a Surestop switch which allows the all of the water to be turned off at the flick of a switch and how I’ve told my own kids that if there’s ever a problem when they’re home alone, that they can flick the Surestop switch off and the immediate panic is over until I can get back to sort it.
I always carry Surestop switches on the van so I was able to install this at the same time as fitting the new towel rails also meaning that she didn’t need to take anymore time away from work for me on a return visit.
I’ve done posts on Surestop switches previously and their benefits, but this was one situation I’d never really come across because in this instance the customer knew where to isolate the washing machine water supply and also knew where to turn off the water main at the stop tap. And now with the new Surestop switch fitted, her children can now also get any situation with water under control at the flick of a switch.

We received this call late on Saturday. A Valiant Eco Pure combination boiler was showing a F75 fault and our customer had no heating or hot water.
Upon investigation we discovered that a blocked pressure sensor was to blame. We fitted a new one and the house was lovely and warm again within no time and hot water was once again flowing…

We must come across this issue at least 4 times a month.
One of the most important aspects of gas regulations are flues and ventilation. This is because they are dealing directly with the issues concerning carbon monoxide. This is the colourless, odourless and tasteless poisonous gas that can kill or cause serious harm in the smallest concentrations, which is why flues and ventilation on gas appliances are so important.
In this instance the house had sold and we were contacted to provide a boiler service and gas safety inspection as requested by the purchaser’s solicitors. You can see that we discovered that the recently fitted boiler had a flue system that wasn’t screwed to the boiler, or sealed around the wall internally or externally. This means that the flue can easily fall apart and then allow poisonous gases into the property and therefore cause a danger to life.
It doesn’t get much more serious than this other than having no flue fitted at all and this is why I’m still surprised every time I see new boilers fitted in such a way.
This particular boiler is a very good make and comes with a 10 year parts and labour warranty when installed correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and gas regulations.
However the amount of times we see installations left like this by so called reputable engineers is shocking.
It always makes me smile when people sometimes say “I’ve had a cheaper quote for the same boiler that you’ve quoted on”. In this instance the 2 main factors would be…firstly…my installation comes with a 10 year parts and labour warranty. As this is an illegal install it therefore has no warranty. Secondly, my installation will not be dangerous and put anyone at risk living within the property.
I haven’t started on the other corners that were cut elsewhere to get this job done as quickly as possible. With us you can be assured that all work is carried out correctly and completely.
