Sweet Molasses and Massive Slabs: A Heavyweight Feeder Session with Dale Calvert
When you're targeting specimen bream and powerful tench at long range, every detail matters. Accuracy, presentation and bait attraction all play a crucial role, but one factor often makes the biggest difference of all — keeping fish feeding confidently in your swim once they arrive.
For my latest feeder session, I put my trust in a proven combination that continues to produce the goods time and time again: Bait-Tech Sweet Liquid Molasses and a generous helping of dead red maggots.
The result was an unforgettable session packed with quality fish, screaming tips and some seriously impressive slabs.
Reaching the Fish 🎣
The bigger fish were holding well off the bank, so getting into position meant wading out and setting up directly in the water to maximise both range and accuracy.
Long-distance feeder fishing leaves no room for error. Every cast has to hit the clip, every feeder has to land on the money, and every part of the setup needs to work flawlessly.
With a distant treeline selected as my marker, rods clipped up and feeders loaded, everything was in place for what promised to be a special day's fishing.
The Edge: Bait-Tech Sweet Liquid Molasses
When it comes to attracting big bream and tench, sweet baits have long been a winning formula, which is why Bait-Tech Sweet Liquid Molasses played such a central role in my approach.
This rich, dark liquid additive delivers an intense sweet attraction that fish simply find hard to ignore. Equally important for long-range feeder fishing, its thick consistency helps bind the groundbait mix perfectly, ensuring the feed reaches the lake bed intact before gradually breaking down and releasing attraction exactly where it's needed.
For anglers looking to improve both attraction and consistency in their mixes, Sweet Liquid Molasses is a genuine game changer.
Why Dead Reds?
To complement the sweet feed mix, I introduced plenty of dead red maggots.
Dead reds are one of the most underrated additions to a feeder approach. Rather than burrowing into soft silt or drifting away from the target area, they remain exactly where the fish find them, creating a concentrated carpet of natural feed across the lake bed.
Combined with the sweet molasses mix, they provided the perfect high-protein feeding zone that encouraged fish to settle and feed confidently for extended periods.
Tincas on the Feed:
It wasn't long before the feeder tip started rattling round.
The first fish to arrive were the tench, and they were absolute crackers.
Deep olive flanks, powerful tails and immaculate condition made every fish a pleasure to catch and admire. The first proper battle of the day ended with a thick-set specimen safely in the net, quickly followed by another heavy fish sporting the classic golden belly that every tench angler loves to see.
A third stunning tinca soon followed, once again falling to the irresistible combination of sweet feed and dead red hookbait.
The Slabs Move In:
As the session developed, the rod tips pulled round once more as a shoal of big bronze bream moved over the feed.
These were proper slabs in every sense of the word — broad-backed fish with serious depth, weight and unmistakable bronze colouring.
One after another, quality bream found their way over the rim of the landing net, each fish proving just how effective the molasses and dead red combination can be when targeting bigger specimens.
Final Thoughts:
Sessions like this reinforce why Bait-Tech Sweet Liquid Molasses remains an essential addition to my bait bag.
Its ability to bind mixes, boost attraction and keep fish feeding over the baited area makes it a hugely versatile tool for feeder anglers targeting everything from bream and tench to carp and other large species.
Combined with dead red maggots, it created a feeding area that fish simply didn't want to leave.
When you're fishing at range and every opportunity counts, confidence in your bait is priceless — and on this occasion, Bait-Tech delivered once again.
Until next time, tight lines.
