This week, our Year 12 BTEC and A Level Law students visited Sheffield Crown Court for a fascinating insight into the criminal justice system.

Students heard from a legal clerk, court usher and Judge David Dixon, who spoke about his proud yet humble upbringing on a council estate in the North-East of England, his belief that the judiciary should be open to all regardless of background, and the challenges of sentencing young men and young women. He also discussed differences he has observed between male and female defendants appearing before the courts.
Students then observed live cases from the public galleries, including indictments for murder, attempted murder, r**e, GBH, ABH and robbery, allowing them to see the law in action and apply their classroom learning to a real courtroom setting.

A huge thank you to everyone at Sheffield Crown Court for providing such a memorable and inspiring experience.

The Business and Law Faculty is incredibly proud of all the students who participated in this year’s Irwin Mitchell Legal Essay Competition.

Students produced outstanding essays exploring some of the most significant legal issues facing society today, including artificial intelligence, online safety, medical law, human rights, family law and legal reform.

The quality of submissions was exceptional, reflecting the ambition, academic excellence and critical thinking skills of our Law students. Competitions such as this provide invaluable opportunities for students to engage with the legal profession beyond the classroom and develop the skills needed for future careers in law.

We are enormously grateful for our successful partnership with Irwin Mitchell and would like to thank Emily Mansfield, Georgina Brammer and the PRIME team for their time, expertise and support throughout the competition.

Congratulations to our prize winners: 3rd Prize – Aleesha Rangzib, 2nd Prize – Lily May Allison, and 1st Prize – Connie Diskin, whose exceptional essay earned her not only first place but also a one-week work experience placement with Irwin Mitchell. ⭐️

A huge well done to every student who entered. You have represented Thomas Rotherham College superbly and should be incredibly proud of your achievements.
