Hi kitesurfers,

We've been contacted by the harbour master as a number of kitesurfers were riding along the beach at the bird sanctuary, at the east end of Brownsea Island on Sunday (see photos for location detail).

Although that flat water section is extremely tempting in a NW wind , kitesurfing in this area is not allowed, as you would know if you read the rules when you purchased your (mandatory) Poole harbour kite licence.

In addition, this activity caused some hysteria among the birds and caused all of the (100+) Spoonbills recently arrived from their migration to depart in a panic. Apparently these are a very rare and endangered species. The impact on the birds was noticed by a large number of people including the harbour master.

Please can we all stay in the designated kite surfing area and avoid any conflict with other users in the harbour. It's in our best interests if we want to keep kitesurfing in the harbour 😁
