🎬 In 1985, WHAM! made history as the first Western pop act to perform in communist China. Newly restored footage reveals the untold story of the iconic tour that helped launch WHAM! to global superstardom, and you can see it all on the big screen at Lighthouse - 10 Days In China (12A) - on Tue 28 July. 🎶✨

... 7 July 1978 Crowther’s In Town

The first night of our very first summer season show, which ran until 2 September, saw the late, great Leslie Crowther – who had previously visited in April on our opening weekend to pull the first pint in the bar and announce his summer season – top a bill of tried and tested variety acts. Angie Tilly Marper of Mann & Mee (pictured) told us: “We were on that first summer season with Leslie Crowther. Mr Covell (Poole Arts Centre’s founding director Anthony Covell) wouldn't advertise, he told Leslie: ‘Too much advertising is a trifle vulgar.' Ian McKellen came to the Towngate Theatre with the RSC and used to watch our show from the wings, mesmerised as to how we could all go on stage as ourselves! Happy memories.

“We now live in Barnsley, Yorkshire. We teach music these days and run an amateur theatre company which is hard work but very rewarding to see students perform the skills they have learned.”

Do you remember seeing Crowther’s In Town?
