Flowering from mid-summer into autumn, it attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Best grown in full sun and well-drained soil, it is easy to grow and provides long-lasting colour and structure to borders.

A damp Scottish summer often means making the most of every dry spell to keep on top of grass cutting.
With all the recent rain, lawns are growing quickly, but so is the moss.
Heavy moss can make it difficult to achieve a shorter, cleaner cut and often leaves lawns looking uneven after mowing and damage can occur as of a result of having to mow to keep the lawns under control and in a suitable condition for people who want to enjoy the space it creates.
While the grass is enjoying the conditions, gardeners are certainly having to work a bit harder to stay ahead of it.
That's summer lawn care in Scotland!

Delighted to have successfully completed my Lantra Ride-on Mower Operator training and assessment.
The course covered safe operation, daily checks, maintenance, risk assessment, and best practice when using ride-on mowing equipment.
The rain stayed off for the most part, making for a productive day of training and practical exercises. Continuing to develop skills and gain qualifications is an important part of providing a professional service, and it's great to add another certification to the list. Looking forward to putting the knowledge and training into practice in the future.

A bit late posting this one, but on the 29th of May I had the chance to visit the Scone Palace Garden Fair. Along with looking around the plant nurseries and showcase gardens, it was a great day for good food, catching up with familiar faces, and enjoying the atmosphere. It was also nice to meet some of my former SRUC lecturers and have a chat about horticulture and what everyone has been up to. I was fortunate enough to bump into a few clients as well, which was great. The planting displays, trade stands, and gardens provided plenty of inspiration, making it an enjoyable and worthwhile day all round.

Ficus microcarpa is one of the most popular bonsai trees for beginners due to its resilience and adaptability to indoor conditions. Its small, glossy leaves and vigorous growth make it ideal for learning pruning and shaping techniques. Thriving in a bright location with consistent watering, it is a forgiving species that allows new growers to develop their bonsai skills while creating an attractive miniature tree.

Bonsai is the art of growing and training trees in containers to create the appearance of a mature tree in miniature. Through careful pruning, wiring, and long-term care, trees are shaped over many years, combining horticultural skill with artistic design. This process creates unique living trees that reflect the beauty and character of nature on a smaller scale.

Pseudotsuga menziesii is a fast-growing evergreen conifer that can make an interesting bonsai subject. Its soft green needles, rugged bark, and strong apical growth allow it to develop the appearance of a mature tree over time. While less common than pine or juniper, Douglas fir responds well to careful pruning and wiring, making it a rewarding long-term bonsai project for those willing to invest time and patience.
