ARFID Recovery Series – What Needs to Happen
Step 1: Find Your Reason Why
Living with ARFID can make everyday life feel smaller than it should be. It’s not just about food — it’s about all the moments where food shows up and suddenly everything becomes complicated.
And when it comes to making progress, the mind doesn’t change just because we tell it to. It changes when it has a reason. A personal reason. A reason that matters deeply to you.
That’s why the very first step in overcoming ARFID is simple but powerful: Find your reason why.
Why your “why” matters
Your mind needs something to move towards. Something meaningful enough to outweigh the fear, the discomfort, or the sensory overwhelm.
For many people, those reasons are about connection — being able to join in without stress, worry, or avoidance.
Think about moments like:
Birthdays where everyone is eating together and you want to be part of it
Weddings where the meal is a big part of the day
BBQs with friends where you don’t want to feel on edge
Christmas and Easter where food is woven into the celebration
Family gatherings where you want to feel included, not different
Holidays where you want to enjoy the experience instead of planning around food anxiety
These are the moments where ARFID can make life feel restricted — and where change can make life feel bigger.
But your reasons might also be practical:
Wanting to feel healthier or have more energy
Wanting to join in at work lunches or team events
Wanting to be seen as a team player, not the person who always has to opt out
Wanting daily life to feel easier, more flexible, more enjoyable
Your “why” doesn’t have to be dramatic. It just has to be yours.
A simple exercise to get started
Take a blank piece of paper. Sit somewhere quiet and write down every way that being able to eat more foods would improve your life.
Think about:
The events you want to join in with
The people you want to feel closer to
The memories you want to make
The stress you want to reduce
The freedom you want to feel
Let it be honest. Let it be personal. Let it be yours.
This list becomes the foundation for every step that follows. It’s the anchor you return to when things feel challenging. It’s the reminder of why this journey matters.
This is where change begins
Overcoming ARFID isn’t about forcing yourself to eat foods you’re not ready for. It’s about building motivation, safety, and confidence — step by step.
And it all starts with your reason why.
