Trauma responses are survival responses. 💜
When someone experiences abuse, fear, or ongoing trauma, the brain and body instinctively respond in ways designed to protect them. You may have heard of the four common trauma responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. These are not conscious choices, they are automatic reactions to danger and stress.
Understanding these responses is important because many survivors are unfairly judged for how they reacted during abuse. In reality, trauma responses are the body’s way of trying to survive.
🔹 Fight – responding to danger by becoming defensive, angry, or confrontational. This can look like arguing back, resisting control, or trying to protect yourself or others.
🔹 Flight – trying to escape the danger, physically or emotionally. This might involve avoiding conflict, leaving situations quickly, emotionally shutting down, or constantly feeling on edge.
🔹 Freeze – feeling unable to move, speak, react, or make decisions. Many survivors describe feeling “stuck” or numb during frightening situations. Freeze is one of the most misunderstood trauma responses, but it is a very common survival mechanism.
🔹 Fawn – trying to keep the peace or stay safe by pleasing the abusive person. This can involve apologising excessively, agreeing to things out of fear, or prioritising someone else’s needs to avoid conflict or harm.
These responses can continue long after abuse has ended, impacting confidence, relationships, decision-making, and emotional wellbeing. Survivors may blame themselves for how they reacted, but there is no “perfect” way to survive trauma.
Recognising trauma responses helps us move away from judgement and toward understanding. Survivors deserve compassion, safety, and support, not questions about why they didn’t act differently.
At Juno, our work is grounded in trauma-informed support, helping survivors understand their experiences, rebuild confidence, and heal at their own pace.
