Our next auction takes place on Sunday 19th July from 5.00pm. We continue this week to review the coins in our catalogue.

The first is from the Trinovantes, a Dubnovellaunos Branch, II Type gold stater, ABC 2392. The obverse has a bended flan with wreath motif, two outline crescent and two rings in the centre forming two ‘sad’ hidden faces and a ringed pellet at the end of the wreath. On the reverse is a full-bodied horse prancing left with beaded mane and long high-arched tail, ringed-pellet and [DVBNO]VIILLA above with beaded wavy branch below. Good VF, scintillating rose gold, bold horse with clear inscription Ex Anthony Bate collection, bt. Chris Rudd (2022). Found Great Shelford, Cambs., November 2019. Extremely Rare die pair, only nine others recorded including three in museums.

Next we have a coin from the Eastern North Thames Region. A Tail Chewer silver half unit, ABC 2291. The obverse has a horse left with beaded mane, head turned back, S-shaped ‘horn’, tail in mouth, small horse in front and beaded border. The reverse has a horse right, two stranded tail, ringed-pellet below and beaded border. As struck, Good VF, neat round flan of bright silver, bold foal. Found High Easter, Essex. Excessively Rare only one other recorded.

Just two more weeks until our next auction which takes place on Sunday 19th July from 5.00pm.

Our coins this week come from the Belgae. The first is a Chute gold stater, ABC 746. It has a wreath pattern on the obverse with downward-facing leaves. On the reverse is a disjointed triple-tailed horse facing left, shrimp and large blobs above, disjointed crab below and ‘pecking bird’ behind. VF/Good VF neat flan of buttery yellow gold, beautifully ornamented, full tail lines, lovely pecking bird, shrimp and crab. Rare.

Our second coin is a Wheel and Rosette silver unit. The obverse has beaded crescents either side of a multi-spoked wheel, ringed-pellet in cusps, ‘duck’ like object either side and ringed-pellets around. The reverse has a triple-tailed annulate horse facing right with beaded mane, sunburst with beaded-ring in centre above, two ring rosette below and ringed-pellets around. New type, previously unpublished and unrecorded. 1/3 missing, otherwise EF, super silver, fantastic wheel and rosette, all key elements displayed fully and sharply. UNIQUE?
