Inverness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 — If you’re exploring the Scottish Highlands, chances are you’ll pass through Inverness, the small but charming city often called the capital of the Highlands.

While many travelers treat it as a quick stop on the way to places like Loch Ness or the Isle of Skye, it’s actually worth slowing down and spending a little time here.

Here are a few things to catch while you’re in town:

🌉 Walk along the River Ness
The river runs straight through the city and is one of the prettiest places to wander. Follow the walking paths, cross the suspension bridges, and keep an eye out for views of Inverness Cathedral and the colorful houses along the water.

🥃 Try a whisky tasting
Scotland and whisky go hand in hand. Inverness has several cozy tasting rooms where you can sample different styles and learn a bit about the craft.

🏰 Look for Inverness Castle
Perched above the river, the red sandstone castle is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. It’s currently being transformed into a visitor experience, but the views from the hill are still worth the climb.

🛍 Browse the Victorian Market
This historic indoor market dates back to the 1800s and is a great place to pop into small local shops and cafés.

🎶 Keep an eye out for Highland culture
From murals and music to the occasional bagpiper, little nods to Scottish heritage pop up throughout the city.

Inverness may be small, but that’s part of the charm. And for any Outlander fans out there, we know this is one you won’t want to miss. 🌿
