I’ve been musical from a really young age — I grew up playing piano, flute, violin and harp, and I’ve always loved singing too. I was really into harmonies and actually wanted to be a composer when I was younger.
I’ve always been drawn to energetic music — starting with house and trance, then moving into hardcore, jungle, drum & bass and dubstep. When I was about 14 I came across a Helter Skelter tape and I was completely hooked. It felt so different to anything I’d heard on the charts or TV — I loved that underground energy straight away.
I didn’t properly get into drum & bass until university, and that’s when I started mixing at 19. From there it just grew. I ended up starting my own drum & bass night in Bangor called Switch because there wasn’t really a bass music scene there at the time. It ran for a few years and we had artists like Fabio and Bailey come and play, which was amazing.
Life took over for a while and I had my children, but recently I’ve picked it all back up again — and since getting back on the decks I’ve been playing out regularly and fully back into it.
I tend to focus a lot on harmony and melody in bass music, but what I really love is when a track has something a bit unusual or unexpected in it — that’s what makes it stand out for me.
