As parents, we can’t be with our children every second of every day but we can create a home where they always feel safe to talk to us. ❤️

With the school holidays approaching, children may spend more time with relatives, friends, holiday clubs, or babysitters. While most experiences are positive, it’s important to remain observant and keep the lines of communication open.Pay attention if your child:
• Suddenly becomes withdrawn or unusually anxious.
• No longer wants to visit someone they previously enjoyed seeing.
• Has nightmares, sleep problems, or becomes unusually clingy.
• Shows knowledge or behaviours that are not appropriate for their age.
• Tells you that someone asked them to keep a secret.

These signs do not automatically mean abuse. They can also be caused by bullying, anxiety, family changes, or other challenges. However, they are a reminder to pause, listen, and have a gentle conversation.

Teach your child:
💙 Their body belongs to them.
💙 It’s okay to say “no” if something makes them uncomfortable.
💙 No trusted adult should ask them to keep secrets about touching or anything that makes them feel scared.
💙 They can always come to you without fear of being blamed or getting into trouble.

Sometimes, the most powerful safeguarding tool isn’t a locked door—it’s a child who knows they will always be believed and supported.

If you’re worried about a child’s safety, seek advice from your GP, local safeguarding services, or the appropriate authorities.

💗 A few years ago, I had a colleague who shared something I’d never heard before.

She told me she was born with two wombs, and because each womb had its own lining, she sometimes had what seemed like two periods in one month. One womb would bleed first, then the other.

At the time, I was fascinated. While this is rare, it can happen in women with a condition called uterus didelphys (double uterus).

A double uterus is a congenital condition, meaning a woman is born with it. She has two separate uterine cavities, often with two cervices, and sometimes even two vaginas. Because each uterus has its own lining, the two may not always shed at the same time. This can result in bleeding at different times of the month, making it seem like two separate periods.

Not everyone with a double uterus experiences this. Some women have no symptoms at all and only discover it during investigations for irregular bleeding, recurrent miscarriage, infertility, or even during pregnancy. Many women with this condition also go on to have healthy pregnancies.

If your periods are unusually frequent, very heavy, or something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Speak to your healthcare professional. An ultrasound or other imaging tests can help identify congenital differences in the uterus.

Every woman’s body is unique, and sometimes what seems unusual has a medical explanation. ❤️

A persistent sore throat is not always “just a sore throat.”

Recently, a patient presented with a sore throat that wasn’t improving. They also had painful swallowing, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, and a swollen lymph node on one side of the neck. Further investigations confirmed throat cancer.

Symptoms that should not be ignored include:
• A sore throat that lasts for several weeks
• Hoarseness or changes in your voice
• Difficulty or pain when swallowing
• A lump in the neck
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent ear pain
• Night sweats

Many people associate throat cancer with smoking and excessive alcohol use. While these are important risk factors, some throat cancers are linked to HPV (Human Papillomavirus), and not everyone diagnosed will have a history of smoking or alcohol use.

If you have symptoms that persist or simply don’t feel right, please seek medical advice. Early diagnosis can make a significant difference.

Your body whispers before it screams. Listen to it. ❤️
