Not all distress looks distressed.

We teach children about road safety.
We teach them about fire safety.
We teach them about online safety.

So why do we wait until crisis before we teach safeguarding?
What if safeguarding became something children understood early…not as a scary word connected to social services or punishment, but as:
• looking out for each other
• understanding emotions
• recognising unsafe situations
• knowing how to ask for help
• creating safe spaces to talk
• learning kindness, empathy, and healthy boundaries

Because safeguarding is not just a process. It’s a culture.

I’ve been developing a child-friendly safeguarding concept focused on emotional wellbeing, leadership, compassion, peer awareness, and early intervention for young people.
Not fear-based.
Not overwhelming.
Not system-heavy.

Just real conversations that help children understand:
“safe people create safe spaces.”
If we normalise these conversations early, we reduce stigma, increase understanding, and create safer communities together.

I genuinely believe we need to start bringing safeguarding into everyday language in a way children can understand, relate to, and carry into adulthood.

What are your thoughts?
Should safeguarding education begin earlier in schools and communities?
