The US government shutdown is finally ending after 41 days – here’s what went down.
After six weeks of federal workers missing paychecks and government services grinding to a halt, eight Democratic senators broke ranks to back a Republican deal that’ll reopen the government.
The deal? Funding through January 2026, with a promise to vote on healthcare tax credits by mid-December. But that promise instead of immediate action has left many Democrats furious – California’s Governor called it “pathetic,” and some are even calling for Senate leadership to step down.
Why it matters to you: Government shutdowns aren’t just political theatre. They mean delayed tax refunds, closed national parks, and hundreds of thousands of workers going without pay. This one lasted long enough to seriously hurt real people.
The bill still needs to pass the House and get the President’s signature, but lawmakers are heading back to Washington now to make it happen.
