📌Artist Highlight- Jennifer Anderson
Indigo Light, Oil on canvas, 15x15cm, £750
Part of the AOAP Projects' Summer Show 'Illuminated' at the Royal Society of Arts.
Jennifer Anderson combines clear-eyed examination with formidable illusionistic skill, producing sensitive, haunting portraits. Within tightly-cropped compositions, illuminated by unsparing mid-winter light, she conveys the real, weighty physicality of her subjects while at the same time hinting at the inaccessibility of their inner lives.
Jennifer Anderson has exhibited widely in the UK with galleries such as Beaux Arts Gallery and Maclean Fine Art. Her work has been selected multiple times for major open exhibitions, including the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, alongside regular inclusion at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition. She has received numerous awards from leading institutions such as the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Glasgow Institute, and her work is held in prestigious collections through commissioned portraits of figures including Roger Penrose.

Steyaert explores the relationship between sculpture and painting, creating works that float between the mediums, drawing on themes of grandeur, memory, and sensory immersion. Her practice explores silicone’s aesthetic quality, alongside canvas, oil paint and wood, drawing from architecture and painting. Steyaert’s creative process is intuitive, pouring and shaping silicone meticulously. The resulting delicate yet powerful forms challenge our perception of painting and sculpture, capturing movement and abstraction.
Steyaert’s art encourages alternative perspectives and interpretations, evading traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture. It embodies the transgressive nature of contemporary artistic expression, an ever-evolving practice inviting curiosity and contemplation.
