🎂 The Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn was born on this day 420 years ago.
After setting up his own studio in Leiden, Rembrandt moved to the booming metropolis of Amsterdam, which was fast becoming the cultural and commercial capital of Northern Europe.
These pendant portraits, which hang in our Great Gallery, were among the early commissions for portraits that Rembrandt received following his move to Amsterdam at the end of 1631.
They depict a wealthy Amsterdam merchant, Jean Pellicorne, his wife Susanna van Collen, and their children Anna and Caspar.
Aged just 25, Rembrandt worked as principal portrait painter for Hendrick Uylenburgh, a prominent art dealer whose cousin, Saskia, he married three years later.
By the end of the decade, Rembrandt had become the city’s most sought-after portraitist.
