The Ellsworth mountains, Antarctica. I took this at the end of a two-month-long expedition in the interior of the continent. Once you get up on Antarctica's plateau, the scenery becomes somewhat monotonous, the sky changes with the different moods of the ice cap, but in terms of landscape, it feels very much like being at sea.

Day after day, as far as the eye can see, is a desert of broken ice and sastrugi. After a long expedition, seeing nothing other than a flat horizon, anything else feels like a blessed relief.

While not the most impressive mountains I have seen before, these were undoubtedly some of the most welcome!

The waterfall in the background is called 'Break-neck Falls', hopefully in anticipation of what might happen if you fell down them rather than what did happen!
