Yes, epoxy resin can be used over underfloor heating systems, but there are a few important considerations to keep in mind to avoid issues and ensure a high-quality result:
1. Resin Compatibility with Heat
Heat Resistance: Make sure the epoxy resin you use is suitable for higher temperatures. Generally, epoxy resins can withstand temperatures up to around 50–60°C, but for heated floors, it’s better to use a heat-resistant resin that can tolerate repeated thermal expansion.
Thermal Expansion: During heating/cooling cycles, the floor will expand and contract. A high-quality resin with a low thermal expansion index will help prevent cracks and deformations over time.
2. Controlled Heating Cycle
Avoid Thermal Shocks: After applying the resin, it’s essential to turn on the heating gradually, not at maximum temperature, to avoid thermal shocks. Start heating at a low temperature and gradually increase it so that the resin can adjust to the temperature change.
Optimal Temperature: Most underfloor heating systems operate between 25-30°C, which is safe for most flooring resins.
3. Type of Surface for Resin Application
Epoxy resin adheres best to a cement screed or a floor that is stable and doesn’t expand or contract excessively. For wooden floors, extra caution is needed, as wood has higher thermal expansion, which can lead to resin cracking.
4. Thickness of the Resin Layer
Thin Layer: A thinner layer is recommended because excessive resin thickness can insulate heat and reduce the efficiency of the underfloor heating. Thinner layers allow better heat dissipation and reduce the risk of resin cracking.
5. Special Resins for Flooring
There are epoxy resins specially designed for flooring, including applications over underfloor heating, which contain additives to prevent yellowing and improve resistance to thermal cycles. These products are recommended for optimal durability.
In Conclusion
It’s possible to apply epoxy resin over a heated floor, but it’s important to choose a high-quality resin, apply a thin layer, and gradually turn on the heating system after the resin has fully cured. This way, you’ll have a durable and aesthetically pleasing floor that is compatible with underfloor heating.
