A family group conference is a planning meeting led by the family and arranged by an independent person. The process ensures that families are at the centre of decision-making.

New report highlights the challenges facing kinship families raising children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Family and friends stepping in as kinship carers often take in a child at a moment's notice - in the middle of a family crisis, with little warning and even less information. Yet the systems designed to support families rarely reflect this reality.
Roughly half of all children in kinship care have a special educational need or disability. That's a huge proportion of children who may need extra support to thrive at school.
Today, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Kinship Care, which Family Rights Group coordinates, has published Fighting Two Battles – a new report exploring the experiences of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who are being raised by relatives and friends in kinship care.
Many children in kinship care have experienced trauma, loss, or family breakdown before they even start school. But too often, schools and the wider SEND system don't have a clear understanding of kinship care or what children may have been through.
Delays in getting children in kinship care the therapeutic support they need pile pressure on families already holding things together.
As the Government takes forward reforms to special educational needs and disabilities support in schools and colleges for all children with SEND, we’re joining the APPG in calling for recognition and support so that kinship families are not left behind.
