Happy Cow Appreciation Day! 🐄

Meet our favourite cow in the veterinary history archive. She appears in Domestic Poultry by Bonington Moubray, first published in 1813, and the illustration is so finely detailed it looks almost hand painted. 🎨

Bonington Moubray was the pseudonym of John Lawrence (1753–1839), an early animal welfare advocate who called for legal protections for animals as far back as 1796. He was also a recognised authority on horses, oxen and sheep.

A small illustration, but a striking reminder of how far back the connection between animal welfare, knowledge and the veterinary profession really goes.

Applications for the 2027 RCVS Knowledge Quality Improvement awards are now open! Our awards categories have been refreshed to include other approaches to QI alongside clinical audit.

We’re accepting applications for quality improvement (QI) approaches to:

• Improving patient outcomes
• Improving veterinary teamwork
• Improving service delivery
• Improving antimicrobial stewardship.
