Turns out even football is moving on from that old way of thinking. England coach Thomas Tuchel has ditched the macho threats and "hair dryer" shout fests in favour of something rather more familiar to me - a coaching approach.

Before their match against Croatia, he told the team to "take the shackles off." Harry Kane said he asked them: "What's the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be. If we lose, we lose. We lose in our way."

No pressure. No fear-mongering. Just trust. The result? A 4-2 victory and a player saying "what a top manager."

This is exactly what I believe as a coach. You don't need to be fearless - you just need to trust yourself more than you trust your fear. The loudest victories are often won in a whisper, not a shout.

I've never been a football fan. But with this kind of coaching guiding the game? I'm a shameless convert.
