The week ahead: 12/02/24 | Intertrader 12/02/2024

While the Chinese New Year celebrations continue throughout the week, we’ll see the latest US federal budget balance today, followed by tomorrow’s Australian NAB business confidence, UK labour market data including average earnings and employment, German and eurozone ZEW economic sentiment and OPEC’s monthly oil production report.

Inflation updates are due with CPI figures for the US on Tuesday, the UK (last time up 4.0% year-on-year) on Wednesday and France on Friday. We’ve also got GDP data for the eurozone and Japan on Wednesday and the UK on Thursday, plus industrial production for the eurozone on Wednesday and Japan, the UK and the US on Thursday.

Other key figures include the latest trade balance for the UK and the eurozone on Thursday; retail sales for the US on Thursday and the UK on Friday; US import and export price indices and the NY Empire State and Philadelphia Fed manufacturing indices on Thursday; and US housing starts and building permits along with the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey on Friday.

Drinks giant Coca-Cola leads the earnings on Tuesday, while we’ll also have updates from Arista Networks, Cadence, Avis Budget Group, Vornado, Teradata on Monday; Shopify, Airbnb, Zoetis, Moody’s, Marriott International, Ecolab, Waste Connections, AIG, Restaurant Brands International, Biogen, Akamai, MGM Resorts International and AutoNation on Tuesday; and Cisco, Equinix, Manulife, Occidental, Barrick Gold, Global Payments, Rollins, Ventas, CF Industries, United Utilities, Lithia Motors, Royal Gold, Generac, ThyssenKrupp, Tripadvisor, Dunelm and Bilfinger on Thursday.

DAX 40 components Airbus and Commerzbank report to the market on Thursday, along with Applied Materials, Deere & Co, Safran, Relx, Southern, Agnico Eagle, Coinbase, CBRE, Targa, EPAM Systems, Liberty Global, PBF Energy and Wendy’s. We finish with updates from Eni, Vulcan Materials, NatWest and Portland General Electric on Friday.

Highlights this week include earnings from Dow components Caterpillar and McDonald’s today, Amgen on Tuesday and Walt Disney on Wednesday, plus the latest Halifax and RICS UK house price reports on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

We start the week with services PMI data for Australia (late last night), Japan, China, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US, along with Germany’s trade balance, the ISM’s US non-manufacturing PMI and, late in the day, Japan’s household spending.

On Tuesday the Reserve Bank of Australia announces its latest monetary policy decision, while we’ll also see the BRC’s UK retail sales monitor, German factory orders and construction PMI data for the eurozone, France, Germany and the UK.

Wednesday brings the latest German industrial production, US trade balance and Japanese current account, and we’ll have CPI inflation updates for China on Thursday and Germany on Friday. Last week’s preliminary figures showed Germany’s annualised CPI inflation rate below expectations at 2.9%.

Other earnings include Vertex, NXP, Simon, Estée Lauder, Palantir, Vodafone, Tyson Foods and Aecom today; BP, Eli Lilly, Linde, Gilead, Fiserv, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Fortinet, Ford, Centene, Cognizant, Ametek, Prudential Financial, Qiagen and Renishaw on Tuesday; and Alibaba, Uber, CVS Health, Equinor, PayPal, McKesson, O’Reilly Automotive, Emerson, Hilton, Allstate, Deutsche Börse, Yum! Brands, Equifax and News Corp on Wednesday.

Another varied set of earnings on Thursday includes ConocoPhillips, AstraZeneca, Siemens, PMI, Duke Energy, Motorola, Compass, Hershey, Take-Two Interactive, ArcelorMittal, Expedia, Ralph Lauren, Harley-Davidson, Snap-on and Cameco; while on Friday figures are due from PepsiCo, Enbridge and Ceconomy.

The Big Five tech firms report to the market this week, with figures from Microsoft and Alphabet on Tuesday, and Apple, Amazon and Meta on Thursday. Another key event is the Fed’s decision on US interest rates on Wednesday, followed by the Bank of England’s own monetary policy decision on Thursday.

Keep an eye out for the latest CPI inflation updates for Australia, France, Germany (all Wednesday) and the eurozone (Thursday); retail sales data for Australia (Tuesday) and Germany (Wednesday); preliminary Q4 GDP for France, the eurozone (both Tuesday) and Germany (Wednesday); and manufacturing PMI updates for Australia (late Wednesday), Japan, China, France, Germany, the eurozone, the UK and the US (all Thursday).

We’ll have earnings from Dow components Boeing (Wednesday), Merck & Co, Honeywell (both Thursday) and Chevron (Friday). Reports are also due from Franklin Resources, F5, Cleveland-Cliffs and Whirlpool today; and AMD, Pfizer, UPS, Starbucks, Mondelez, Diageo, Marathon Petroleum, General Motors, Sysco, Johnson Controls, Electronic Arts, Corning, Skyworks, Teradyne, Boston Properties, Pentair, Juniper, Fortune Brands, JetBlue and Pets at Home on Tuesday.

Wednesday’s schedule includes Novo Nordisk, Mastercard, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Qualcomm, ADP, Boston Scientific, GSK, Phillips 66, MetLife, Old Dominion Freight Line, Rockwell Automation, Aptiv, Avery Dennison, Lennox, Teva and Qorvo. Thursday is also busy with updates from Shell, Sanofi, Eaton, Illinois Tool Works, ABB, Altria, Microchip, Rogers Communications, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Deutsche Bank, Cardinal Health, Stanley Black & Decker, BT, Eastman and Rank.

Friday brings us the influential US nonfarm payrolls release for January (in December the US economy added 216,000 jobs), plus earnings from ExxonMobil, AbbVie, Chevron, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Regeneron Pharma, Cigna, LyondellBasell and Church & Dwight.

After a surprise drop in the UK inflation rate to 3.9% last month, all eyes will be on the latest UK CPI update this Wednesday. More CPI data is due for Germany tomorrow, the eurozone on Wednesday and Japan late on Friday. We’ll also see industrial production figures for the eurozone today, China and the US on Wednesday and Japan on Thursday.

Other key releases include the eurozone trade balance today; UK average earnings and unemployment, German ZEW economic sentiment and the US NY Empire State manufacturing index on Tuesday; and Chinese GDP and unemployment along with US retail sales, import and export price indices and the latest beige book on Wednesday.

Watch out on Thursday for the RICS UK house price balance, Australian unemployment and US building permits, housing starts and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index; while we end the week with UK retail sales, US existing home sales and the preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment.

After today’s US holiday, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and PNC lead the earnings this week on Tuesday. We’ll also have figures from Prologis, Charles Schwab, US Bancorp, Kinder Morgan, Discover and Alcoa on Wednesday; Taiwan Semiconductor, Truist, Fastenal, PPG Industries, M&T Bank, Northern Trust, KeyCorp, and First Horizon on Thursday; and Schlumberger, Travelers, Fifth Third, State Street, Huntington, Regions and Burberry on Friday.
