NHS staff-shortage crisis needs more than a quick Omicron fix, says UNISON | News, Press release | News | UNISON National 14/01/2022

UNISON’s latest snapshot survey shows the pressure on NHS staff. Staff reported more challenging working conditions, working without breaks, working with unfamiliar, temporary staff and in areas where they don’t feel confident.

One member of staff told us “Give staff time out every working day – say an extra 30 minutes to try to relax. Provide staff on busy wards with free meals.”

The NHS has been running on empty for years. Never again must the pleas from staff, employers and unions for urgent action on staffing numbers be ignored.

It is with great sadness that we share the sad news that Lesley Fisher founding chair of UNISON nursing & midwifery committee has passed away. Lesley was a champion of nursing throughout her career she fought and gained victories for 1000’s of NHS staff. She chaired UNISONs Health Service Group Executive through challenging times & pay megotations. A colleague, friend & mentor who was universally loved & admired by all who new her.

A legend who occupied wards, was the first to engaged mental health service users in campaigns. She led strikes & picket lines. Never afraid to say what needed to be said.

Our love and thoughts are with her daughter Caroline and her family.

Gail Adams
My trade union career began with Lesley I new nothing, she took me under her wing & guided me throughout. Her persuasive arguments & tenacity settled many disputes. We owe her a debt of gratitude more than we will ever know.

She didn’t like a fuss but she meant so much to so many & will be forever missed x
