Our next talk:

Speaker: Dr Mary Jane Spiller

Date: Tuesday 14th June 2022, 12-1pm (UK time)

Topic: Exploring the colours of our mind: mental imagery and synaesthesia

Abstract:

In this talk we will consider the relationship between synaesthesia and mental imagery. The many similarities between the two experiences will be considered, along with the potentially distinguishing differences. I will present an overview of research that has explored whether synaesthesia can be elicited in the absence of an external visual stimulus. We will also look at possible differences in mental imagery ability between synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes. We will consider whether it is possible to have synaesthesia without mental imagery, and whether enhanced imagery is essential for synaesthesia. Finally, future directions will be considered, looking at the role of spatial processes within both synaesthesia and mental imagery, and the associations with mental health and well-being.
