Charlie was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) about 4 years ago. Neva Masquerades are more likely to get it than other kinds of Siberians.

We were very lucky to discover it at an early stage when he was going in for dental work, and they did blood tests prior to anaesthesia to check everything was fine. Since then, he’s been on a renal only diet. He has strictly no other food or treats. Charlie has always enjoyed both wet food and dry food, but he has always preferred dry food. Nowadays he will refuse to eat unless we also give him dry food. So we are stuck. We add extra water to his wet food, and of course he still loves to go in the bath and drink water from there.

It’s not easy owning a cat with renal disease, it’s expensive and it can be hard to find the right food that they like. The most important thing is that they eat. It’s even harder when you have another cat, as you have to watch them like a hawk to make sure they don’t switch foods!

Our mornings look like this. It’s slow and it takes a while. Evenings are usually longer as Charlie takes all of his medicine then and also now he has chia seeds as well for his newly diagnosed idiopathic hypercalcemia. Would you be interested in seeing how we give chia seeds to Charlie? 😊
