Every year Buttle UK delivers around 12,000 emergency essentials―children's beds, cookers, fridges, washing machines―to young people and families who, without our support, would otherwise have to go without. We love to hear from the support workers who refer families to us. This family’s support worker told us that the parent she helped cried happy tears when she found out her grant had been approved and that it was her favourite day at work.

At Buttle, it’s our goal to help families move on from crisis. We’re always thrilled to receive such wonderful feedback!

Today, Andy Burnham MP gave his first major speech highlighting his plans for if he were to become Prime Minister. Here’s what he said that would make a difference for children in poverty and crisis:

👉 Prioritising building more council housing
👉 Raising living standards
👉 Tackling youth unemployment through creating parity between academic and technical education
👉 Giving people some “breathing space” on the cost of living immediately
👉 Protecting green spaces from development
👉 Bringing down the cost of utilities through ‘greater public control’

These changes would make a massive difference to the children and young people we support by addressing the root causes of isolation and anxiety. According to our research 81% of families experiencing destitution cannot afford enough gas or electricity for their homes. 60% of parents indicated that the cost-of-living crisis had worsened their children’s friendships and social skills.

When a family is given "breathing space" and lower utility bills, it lifts a heavy weight of survival anxiety off a child's shoulders. Combined with secure council housing and protected green spaces, it transforms a child's daily life from one of isolation to one of opportunity.

We look forward to hearing more.
