Seal engraved family crests, coats of arms, clan badges and signet rings have long held a fascination for art historians, geologists, connoisseurs and collectors not only for aesthetic appeal but also for the great amount of history they contain.

“No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.” 🕊️
- William Blake

Not everything needs to be worn on the hand.

Pendants offer a different way in. Less formal and more instinctive, they are designed to sit close, whether layered or worn alone.

For some, it's the first piece they commission. For others, it comes later, once a signet has already found its place in their collection.

Here, our Stone Set Oval Pendant in onyx, capturing a bird in flight.
A study in movement and perspective, engraved in stone.

We all know the legend of Saint George and his dragon 🐲

Today - on St. George's Day - we’re looking to another medieval beast from that same serpent-born lineage.

Seen here, seal engraved on our Oxford 55 Signet Ring, the cockatrice is described in bestiaries as a hybrid creature hatched from a serpent’s egg, and resembling a two-legged serpent or dragon with a rooster's head.

Feared for its deadly gaze, the cockatrice was said to be able to kill people by simply looking at them.

O ill-dispersing wind of misery!
O my accursed womb, the bed of death!
A cockatrice hast thou hatch'd to the world,
Whose unavoided eye is murderous.
- Richard III, William Shakespeare
