REVIEW: Holiday Romance by Catherine Walsh

The story follows Molly, a woman who looks forward to the flight home for Christmas every year. Ten years ago, Molly sat next to her (terrible) friend’s soon-to-be ex-boyfriend on the flight to Ireland, and the experience was incredibly awkward. When they ran into each other the next two years, things became progressively less cringeworthy, until an unlikely friendship was formed. But it’s not until their tenth flight together is cancelled because of weather that things between them begin to shift. As Molly and Andrew try to get home for the holidays, the experience draws them closer in a way that just might’ve been inevitable after all of these years.

I loved how fun and easy the overall tone was, which paired perfectly with the Christmas setting. It was also so entertaining seeing how Molly and Andrew’s relationship has evolved over the years – they legitimately didn’t get along at first, so that made the delay in them getting together all the more realistic. We see the series of missed connections that lead to them becoming such close friends, and that foundation was an impactful part of the story. They really couldn’t have gotten together any sooner, as much as I might bemoan the years they wasted. The story is told exclusively from Molly’s point of view, so we also she how her thoughts about Andrew shift over time, which made it all the more engaging. I loved trying to figure out Andrew’s feelings, and it was easy to fall for the sweetheart of a man. There’s a large part of me that wants to rate this as 5 stars, and I’m sure that friends to lovers fans will have no trouble doing so – this was pretty great.
