Did you know Marie Curie — the only person in history to win two Nobel Prizes in two different sciences — was not allowed to attend university in her own country?
Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867, she was banned from higher education because she was a woman. So she enrolled in a secret underground university called the "Flying University" — classes held in private homes, moving locations to avoid Russian police.
She eventually moved to Paris, where she won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911.
Poland produced one of the greatest scientists in human history — and almost lost her. Did you know she was Polish?
