What if every cargo flight was replaced by an aircraft lighter than air?

at the ATN Summit shared a project ten years in the making that has just received planning permission. Working with a startup to design a helium aircraft structure, his team used genetic algorithms to test thousands of curvature combinations on off the shelf tubular structures, finding the right balance of curves in and curves out to save 2600 tonnes of steel.

The result is a structure that is as much about geometry as it is about engineering.
