Things I wish I could share with every overseas rescue adopter...
One of the biggest things I’ve learned from living and working with Romanian dogs is something that has changed the way I see and work with all dogs...
The importance of taking the time to truly get to know and understand the dog you have chosen to share your life with.
Not just the behaviours you see on the surface.
But who they are at a genetic, emotional and temperament level.
Because so often, especially when we’re struggling with challenging behaviours, we can find ourselves trying to change, shape and teach our dogs in ways that don’t account for the true nature of that dog as an individual – something that can negatively affect outcomes with naturally evolved dogs.
That doesn’t mean we don’t train our dogs.
It doesn’t mean we let them do anything and everything they want.
I probably more than most people have clear boundaries, expectations and principles when it comes to my dogs.
But it does mean taking a step back and asking ourselves… ‘Am I trying to fit a square peg into a round hole here?’
‘Is there another way I can approach this that gets us the outcome I need, whilst also honouring who my dog is and how they experience the world?’
Because there is so much that comes before training:
🐶 Understanding.
🐶 Meeting the needs of the dog in front of us.
🐶 Relationship.
🐶 Support.
And that, more than anything else, is what makes ‘learning’ so much easier for our dogs and more successful for us. 💛
