NEW: Smoke rises from an Iranian port after the U.S. launched a new wave of strikes on targets inside Iran.

The strikes come after U.S. Central Command said it targeted Iran in response to attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump warned on Wednesday that the latest operation was "in retribution" and cautioned that "if it happens again, it will get much worse."

The latest exchange marks another escalation as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.
