As someone working in the auto locksmith industry here in the UK, I honestly don’t understand why so many people still buy newer BMWs, Volkswagens or EVs with only ONE key. 😅
Modern vehicle security systems are completely different now compared to a few years ago.
And trust me — having one working key and having NO keys at all are two completely different situations.
If you still have one original working key, I can still produce spare keys for many of the latest BMW, Volkswagen and EV models.
In fact, a lot of newer systems now require specialist equipment and knowledge, and there currently aren’t many locksmiths in the UK able to deal with some of these newer platforms properly.
But once that LAST key is lost… things change very quickly.
I recently had a customer who lost all keys to a newer vehicle:
❌ Car completely unusable❌ Vehicle had to go back to the dealer❌ Overseas key order required❌ Nearly a month waiting time❌ Extremely expensive bill
Some of the latest systems are now so heavily encrypted that even I would advise customers to go directly back to the main dealer once all keys are gone.
