Kamishibai (meaning "paper theatre") is a traditional Japanese storytelling art using illustrated panels in a small wooden frame. It originated in 1930s Japan and is thought to be an early influence on manga and animation 🇯🇵

Performances run at 11.45am, 12.15pm, 12.45pm, 1.30pm and 2.00pm, each lasting around 20 minutes. There's also a free paper flower craft in the Children's Library from 12pm.

Stowaway Theatre is a female-led, Devon-based actor-musician company with a particular gift for finding the strange corners of history and turning them into theatre. Their debut show, 40 Elephants, launched in 2024 with Arts Council England support. Their follow-up, CLUCK!, is a brand-new musical about Mike the Headless Chicken, a real chicken from 1940s Colorado who survived 18 months without his head.

They're bringing it to Exeter Library on Wednesday 29 July at 11am. The show runs an hour, and tickets are £5 for Library Members and £7 for non-Members.

This Thursday at Exeter Library, Amanda Golden and Dr Robin Peel are in conversation about Sylvia Plath's poetry and the major new Faber edition that's just been published. It's free, it's one hour, and there's a proper Q&A at the end.

If you've got a ticket, we'll see you Thursday at 6pm in the Rougemont Room on the 2nd floor. If you haven't booked yet, there's still time.
