Goju Ryu Karate-Do Edinburgh
classes are fully live in the Dojo and on zoom
In Goju Ryu Karate, the training can be quite demanding, emphasising both hard and soft techniques. Here are some aspects that are often considered challenging:
1. **Power Training**: Goju Ryu practitioners focus on developing explosive power and strength. This involves rigorous conditioning exercises, such as bodyweight drills, weightlifting, and striking heavy bags¹.
2. **Stances and Basics**: Mastering stances like sanchin, zenkutsu, shiko, and neko ashi is crucial. These stances build stability, balance, and leg strength. Basic techniques like punches, blocks, and kicks are practiced extensively.
3. **Kata Practice**: Goju Ryu has a limited number (12) of katas (forms), but each one is intricate and requires precision. Practicing kata helps refine techniques, timing, and breathing patterns.
4. **Bunkai Drills**: Instead of sparring, Goju Ryu emphasises bunkai (application) drills. These involve dissecting kata movements to understand their practical use in self-defense scenarios.
Remember, how hard you can train varies from person to person, but Goju Ryu's holistic approach ensures a healthy body and a well-rounded martial artist.
