HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Today is the second New Moon since the Winter Solstice, which also means that it is Chinese New Year!
Here’s some colour facts associated with this festival:
🔴 The colour that is associated with Chinese New Year is red.
🔴 Red is considered the colour that brings luck, good fortune, long life and prosperity in Chinese culture.
🔴 Today and for the next 2 weeks, people who celebrate Chinese New Year will most likely wear new red clothing to visit friends and family to exchange blessings and gifts. Money, for example, is given in red envelopes to encourage all that red stands for in abundance.
🔴 Brides and grooms traditionally dress up in bright red colours to enhance their chances of a long life and good fortune.

Het is vandaag de tweede Nieuwe Maan sinds de Winterzonnewende, wat ook betekent dat het Chinees Nieuwjaar is!
Hier zijn enkele kleurfeiten die verband houden met dit festival:
🔴 De kleur die wordt geassocieerd met Chinees Nieuwjaar is rood.
🔴Rood wordt beschouwd als de kleur die geluk, een lang leven en voorspoed brengt in de Chinese cultuur.
🔴 Vandaag en de komende 2 weken zullen mensen die Chinees Nieuwjaar vieren hoogstwaarschijnlijk nieuwe rode kleding dragen om vrienden en familie te bezoeken om zegeningen en geschenken uit te wisselen. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld geld in rode enveloppen gegeven om alles waar rood voor staat in overvloed aan te moedigen.
🔴 Bruiden en bruidegoms kleden zich traditioneel in felle rode kleuren om hun kansen op een lang leven en geluk te vergroten.

We are in Spain to spend time with my partner's family for Christmas and yesterday we spent the day in Sevilla. One colour that you are likely to find in Sevilla is orange; that's because the city has around 40,000 orange trees planted and they are a true joy to the eye. When you come to Sevilla during Spring-time, you can even smell the typical azahar (=orange blossoms) during your walks around the city! These oranges are bitter-tasting, though, so not very nice to eat of hand. Instead, they are used for cooking (for example to make marmelade).
Have you been able to enjoy these orange trees in Sevilla or somewhere else in Spain?

Momenteel bevinden we ons in Spanje om Kerst te vieren met de familie van mijn vriend en gisteren waren we de hele dag in Sevilla. Eén kleur dat je daar rondom de hele stad kan zien is oranje, en wel omdat er ongeveer 40.000 sinaasappelbomen geplant zijn doorheen de stad. Ze zijn een plezier voor het oog, en in de lente kan je ook genieten van hun typische geur wanneer de boom in bloei staat. Deze sinaasappelen smaken echter bitter en worden daarom vooral gebruikt om te koken, zoals in sinaasappelconfituur.
