Last week, we were delighted to welcome four students from Derby Academy – Jasjot, Arunveer, Abdul and Pavel – to our Melbourne facility for a week of structured work experience.

At Acres Engineering, we believe that investing in the next generation is one of the most important things we can do as a business. Throughout the year, we welcome several cohorts of work experience students, giving young people the opportunity to experience modern engineering first-hand and discover the exciting career opportunities our industry has to offer.

Rather than spending the week observing from the sidelines, each student followed a carefully planned rotation programme that gave them experience across every major department within the business. Designed by Acres Engineering, the programme was created to provide a genuine insight into how a modern engineering company operates, from receiving materials through to design, manufacture, finishing, assembly and customer support.

Saturday was one of those days that we will remember for a very long time.

After many months of planning, we unveiled the Lancastria Memorial at Acres as part of our 'Melbourne Remembers' event, marking the closing of the 85th anniversary commemorations of Britain's greatest maritime disaster - This week we shall cover the event in detail over several posts.

As we begin Armed Forces Week, it feels particularly fitting to reflect on the service, sacrifice and courage of those who have worn our nation's uniform, and to remember those who never returned home.

Luke Parker (MD) said:
"My 98-year-old Grandad attended the event. His brother, Private Jack Doughty of the Sherwood Foresters, lost his life aboard the Lancastria on 17 June 1940, on his 21st birthday. To stand beside my Grandad as we remembered those who never came home was a moment I will treasure forever.

Seeing four generations of our family together, united by a story that spans more than eight decades, was a powerful reminder of why remembrance matters. Remembrance is not just about looking back. It is about ensuring that future generations understand our history, learn from it, and carry those stories forward."

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported the event, and helped ensure that the story of the Lancastria continues to be told.

Tomorrow, Acres Engineering Ltd is proud to host Melbourne Remembers, marking the closing of the 86th anniversary commemorations of the sinking of HMT Lancastria – Britain's greatest maritime disaster.

As a British manufacturer with strong links to the Armed Forces community, we were honoured to design and manufacture a dedicated memorial in remembrance of all those affected by the tragedy; those who lost their lives, those who survived, and the families whose lives were changed forever.

This short video provides a behind-the-scenes look at the memorial being manufactured by our team here in Derbyshire ahead of tomorrow's unveiling.

The event will bring together members of the Lancastria Association, veterans, Sea Cadets, civic representatives and the local community for what is believed to be the first large-scale Lancastria remembrance event held in Derbyshire.

If you would like to attend, tickets are free, although registration is appreciated:
