At Windsor Castle today, the applause was not for celebrity or spectacle. It was for perseverance.

In one of the most quietly powerful moments of 2026, Anne, Princess Royal placed an MBE into the hands of a woman who once lost her career because the world refused to understand her disability.

Her name is Merleen Watson.

Profoundly hearing-impaired herself, Merleen watched her career as a senior education officer come to an early end at a time when awareness, accessibility, and compassion for hearing loss were painfully limited. Many people would have retreated into silence after that.

She chose to become a voice instead.

For more than fifteen years, alongside her hearing dogs Grace and later Zyla, Merleen transformed personal hardship into public purpose. She delivered more than 550 talks and community activities, educated over 15,000 people about hearing loss, raised more than £90,000 for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, inspired over 110 hearing puppy sponsorships, and fought relentlessly for accessibility standards in hospitals, councils, and even major venues like Silverstone’s Formula One circuit.

What makes moments like this unforgettable is not the medal itself.

It is the journey behind it.

A woman once overlooked because of her disability stood inside Windsor Castle today while the Crown recognized the very strength the world once failed to see. And somewhere in that moment was a reminder that the people who change society most are often the ones who first had to struggle just to be heard.

There are royal honours.

And then there are honours that feel deeply, undeniably earned.

If you see it, Let us know by take picture and where was it!

This Deaf Awareness Week we’re excited that, in partnership with the JCDecaux Community Channel, our charity will appear on hundreds of digital screens across the country, helping to make hearing loss more visible in everyday spaces.

‘I am ear for you’ shows how our dogs provide connection, companionship and confidence, helping people who are deaf or have hearing loss feel safe, included and empowered in everyday life.

1 in 3 adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus, and our campaign is a chance to build understanding, raise awareness of our charity, and show how our services can provide connection, companionship and confidence – transforming the lives of those who are deaf or who have hearing loss.
