We’ve had a bit of time to let the dust settle on last week’s news. To read all of your messages, here, on your own pages, via text and emails has brought us such a huge amount of comfort during this really tough time for us. Commonground, and pmf before it, has been our life for nearly 7 years so it’s been hard for us to get our heads around what comes next.
It has made us so happy to hear the stories of how our space has been used and how much people have enjoyed visiting, so thank for taking the time to reach out.
We hope it’s not the end of our business but we will be taking some time out for now to reflect and consider our place in Coventry’s cultural scene. It’s an incredibly difficult landscape to traverse especially when there is little to no funding and high costs that seem to just keep on rising. Footfall has always been our biggest issue and unfortunately Far Gosford Street is a tough place to make work for a variety of reasons and there just aren’t many spaces within the city centre suitable for us.
We have had a lovely day today meeting lots of new people and chatting to our regulars - we are definitely going to miss our weekends here. Tomorrow is our last normal daytime opening (11-5) so if you have a few moments spare please do pop in to say hi!
We then have our New Year’s Eve parties on Tuesday - one in the daytime (details to follow)
and then our Fargo event in the evening.
Thank you again for your incredible support, well wishes and kind words. We will miss you all so much

Hey everyone. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we have to announce that commonground will be closing at the end of this year. We have tried as hard as possible to make our space work but unfortunately due to rising costs and a huge reduction in footfall over the last few months we just can’t find a way.
We have been supported so much through this process by many who have tried to find a way to keep us going including the Fargo team but it has to be our decision in the end and one that has been the hardest to make.
We will always be proud of the space we have created here at the village and have loved making it our second home. Our kids have grown up here and will probably miss it more than us!!
We have tried tirelessly to build a space that brings people together, creates conversation and encourages collaboration and we think we have done that, even if it wasn’t for as long as we’d hoped.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us, to the artists, the musicians, the poets, the promoters and our wonderful visitors – we have loved meeting you, getting to know you and sharing this space with you.
We will be open at the weekends until the 31st so please come down and share these last few days with us. Cov sauce is this weekend (21st) which is also Jon’s birthday so another reason to pop down and say hi! We also have a New year’s eve party on the 31st and maybe even a closing party if we can organise something in early January.
Our parting note will be this; Please don’t take these spaces for granted, behind the scenes are people working their hardest to keep them going. Times are incredibly tough and costs just keep rising – generally these places don’t make lots of money and many people, like us, work for free just to keep them going. So without your support they will keep on disappearing.
Please support the rest of the businesses at Fargo going forward your support means everything to us and them.
Kate, Jon and Tom.
