Thank you and for providing in-depth, quality monitoring for the out-of-court courses.
This is some kind feedback from a recent Victim Awareness course I was delivering to offenders.

Yes- it is a very long word, from the 18th Century.
But, it describes something that is easy to do in conflict or when your views differ strongly from another person's views.

We can often be very sure we have thought through our ideas and views, and we often have- using all the information we have available to us.

What if there is more information that we don't have?
This is where it is so important to avoid floccinaucinihilipilification (dismissing and thinking that idea or person is worthless).

How do we do this?
1. Take a breath- rather than jumping in with your view. This gives your brain time to process, rather than reacting from your fight/flight mode.
2. Listen. Really listen to the other view. The other person has built this view based on the information they have, and also feel they have thought through the information. So what different information do they have?
3. Ask questions. Sometimes people are not able to articulate their views well, so good questions can help to identify the information they are basing their ideas on.

Take time to practice these techniques.

There is always an authority gradient, no matter how hard you try.
The question is, what are you going to do about it?

Authority gradient is where there is any kind of power imbalance between people in an organisation. This could be due to status, position, education, gender, length of tenure or a whole host of other things.

A steep gradient hinders communication & increases mistakes, reducing the effectiveness of the organisation.

Putting effective communication systems in place for all staff to be heard is one step that can be taken to lower the gradient, as long as staff feel safe enough to speak up.

Team training and organisational MOTs can help with this.
