Are you speaking to your ideal customers, or simply broadcasting content and hoping it reaches the right people?
No matter how much time and effort you invest in social media marketing, your results will always be limited if you don't truly understand your target audience.
Different generations have different values, buying habits, communication styles, and preferred platforms.
A message that resonates with one group can easily be ignored by another.
The most successful businesses know exactly who they are trying to reach and tailor their content accordingly.
By understanding the characteristics and online behaviours of different age groups, you can create more relevant content, build stronger relationships, and ultimately increase engagement, enquiries, and sales.
In a crowded digital marketplace, knowing your target market isn't just an advantage, it's essential.
Here's how different generations engage online and what that means for your social media strategy and the language you use.

What if the things you loved doing as a child were actually preparing you for your future?
As a young girl growing up in Cumbria with three energetic younger brothers, our home was always noisy and busy, so I found peace in the quietness of my bedroom reading, drawing, writing, and journaling, happily lost in my own world.
At the time, I thought I was simply enjoying my own space doing things I loved.
Looking back, I can see those moments were shaping skills I would rely on throughout my life: creativity, curiosity, observation and a love of storytelling.
As I got older, that curiosity expanded beyond my town.
Writing to other young people around the world opened my eyes to different cultures, experiences and perspectives, and led me to fly to the USA alone at aged 18 to meet one of my penpals.
As a student, reviewing plays at Manchester’s Royal Exchange for the student newspaper taught me how stories connect us and how opportunities often arrive when you dare to put your work out into the world.
One opportunity led to another.
My love of words took me through journalism roles in Cumbria, Middlesbrough and Derby, on to the BBC, and eventually to being the Editor an international magazine.
Nearly 13 years ago, it inspired me to take another leap and launch Write Wai PR & Copywriting Services.
Today, I help businesses tell their stories, raise their visibility online, attract new opportunities and connect with the people they want to reach.
But storytelling is evolving.
As more people turn to AI tools for recommendations, advice and research, businesses need to think differently about how they are found online.
That's why I'm now running workshops to help businesses futureproof their marketing through Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), helping them understand how to create content and build authority so they are more likely to be mentioned and recommended by AI platforms.
It's a natural extension of everything I've learned throughout my career: understanding audiences, crafting compelling content and staying ahead of changes in the way people consume information.
Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to young entrepreneurs at Business Kids in Colchester, and it reminded me of something important: the experiences that shape us early in life are rarely wasted.
The interests you nurture, the skills you develop and even the challenges you overcome can become the foundations of something far bigger than you imagine.
So instead of waiting for the perfect moment, start planting seeds today.
You never know which one will grow into your next opportunity.
