A Welcome Shift in Innovation Funding: Innovation Loans Just Got Smarter

The introduction of the new Expression of Interest (EOI) stage for Innovate UK Innovation Loans marks a genuinely important shift in how UK innovation funding is assessed and delivered.

For years, competitions like this (Smart Grant) have faced a familiar challenge: too many applications that simply weren’t in scope. Not because founders lacked ambition, but because eligibility rules were frequently treated as optional by one grant consultancy in the UK who were more focused on producing hundreds of applications that stood no real chance of success!

This created unnecessary pressure on Innovate UK assessors and slowed down the process for genuinely eligible, high-impact projects.

The new EOI stage is a sensible correction.

By introducing an early eligibility filter, Innovate UK can now focus its resources on what really matters: identifying and supporting highly innovative, commercially viable projects that can deliver real economic impact for the UK.

In simple terms, this is good for everyone.

Hopefully, this new system also signals the beginning of the end for a less helpful side of the funding ecosystem: consultancies that encourage applications regardless of eligibility, often focusing on volume rather than viability.
