We’re delighted to be welcoming back – a civil rights activist and leading expert on authoritarianism in the US.

This visit builds on Eric’s trip in December, when he spent time meeting with activists, community groups, funders and policymakers across Northern Ireland and Ireland. This time around, his focus is on sharing the learnings from that visit and reflecting on the latest trends in how the US is responding to hate and the rise of authoritarianism.

During his time here, Eric met with civil society organisations including STEP– hearing firsthand about the lives of migrant communities and the work they do – and spent time with SCI’s Black Leadership Group, talking with local activists from Black and immigrant communities about their experiences of countering hate. He also delivered a session to a wider group of civil society leaders, drawing on lessons from America about resisting authoritarianism and building long-term resilience.

Today, Eric joined for an interview on ’s Talkback, where he spoke about the roots of polarisation, the relationship between white nationalism and antisemitism, and the dismantling of civil rights legislation under the Trump administration – well worth a listen if you missed it. 📻

We’re grateful to Eric for spending time with us and with so many organisations doing this work on the ground.

One year ago, we brought activists and funders from around the world to Istanbul to share lessons on countering authoritarianism and building resilient movements.

The convening explored strategies for sustaining activism under pressure, protecting civil society space and building solidarity across borders in increasingly authoritarian contexts.

Our report captures the key insights, lessons, and strategies from these discussions.
